What are PDO threads?

Polydioxanone sutures have historically been used for wound closure in orthopedic and cardiovascular surgery, and are completely absorbed by the body. PDO threads used for cosmetic use are designed with barbs or cogs to anchor into the skin to suspend loose skin and produce a visible lift.

In addition to physically lifting the skin, threads stimulate collagen stimulation, which will improve skin elasticity, texture of the skin, and restore volume.

What are the most common areas treated?

Threads can be placed in the forehead to lift the brows, and in the temple area to create the popular “fox eyes”. Threads can be used to improve the nasolabial folds in cases where the addition of volume is not desired. They can also be placed in the lower face to lift and contour the jawline, and to improve sagging jowls.

A thread lift can also be used in the neck, but may require multiple sessions. When it comes to the neck, depending on the severity of laxity in the skin, we may recommend combination treatments with the Morpheus8 or Kybella to get optimal results.

What is the PDO thread procedure?

The procedure typically takes an hour to an hour and a half. The area is numbed with an anesthetic injection, then a small opening is created with a needle. The thread is then placed into the skin with a blunt cannula and maneuvered to achieve the desired results.

What is the minimal downtime after PDO thread procedure?

There is minimal downtime from a thread lift. You can return to work and most of your normal activities. It is recommended to avoid exercise for about a week. PDO thread lifts pose little risk of adverse events. There is virtually no risk of scarring, severe bruising, bleeding or other complications.
